MIBlueBook.com FAQs

Why is online auction data relevant if I'm buying or selling an instrument offline?

Auction sales prices by nature are some of the best indicators of true market value regardless of the product. Approximately 10 million products are sold in the musical instrument category on eBay each year. While certain assumptions can be made regarding online transactions (such as, the buyer has not physically inspected the product), the sheer volume of ACTUAL completed transactions which can be indexed and searched creates an undeniable level of credibility to the data. Buyers and seller will always need to take any third party evaluation with a grain of salt regardless of the data source. Anyone who tells you otherwise is simply looking to benefit their own agenda. MiBlueBook is the only tool available to harness the incredible value of online auction data.

2. Approximately 27,000 new transactions are logged each day!
3. The Terapeak services adds approximately 6,000,000 per day when viewing all categories.
4. Our data includes both Vintage and Brand New products--and everything in-between.

What is eBay's role in MIBlueBook.com?

Once analyzed, this data (which represents the sale price of virtually every single musical instrument transaction on eBay) provides a unique window into the secondary musical instrument market. Since eBay is the largest, fastest growing, and most product diverse marketplace for used musical instruments, it provides the most powerful source for market values of used musical instruments. eBay contributes to, and supports, MIBlueBook.com as a resource for its more than 168 million registered users.

How does MIBlueBook.com benefit the music retailers?

Most importantly, it provides a resource for assigning a value to a trade-ins. MIBlueBook.com eases the processes of trading-in, buying and selling used musical instruments. For retailers taking trade-ins, MIBlueBook.com serves as a "safety net" by allowing the retailer to confidently assess and assign values when accepting a trade-in. This information can also aid the retailer when liquidating or re-selling the trade-in product.

Are music retailers obligated to give the values found in www.MiBlueBook.com?

While MIBlueBook.com was conceived and developed to fill a need in the musical instrument market for a national standard source for musical instrument values, MiBluebook.com does not dictate musical instrument pricing. Retailers are not obligated to honor the values shown in MIBlueBook.com as retailers may find specific circumstances in their business and market, or their personal judgment on the physical condition of an instrument, will determine a different value for a used instrument.

Why are there no values shown for my musical instrument?
In the unlikely event that values do not appear for a musical instrument in www.MiBlueBook.com, a minimum quantity of transactions for the specific musical instrument model may not have occurred within MiBlueBook.com's analysis window. In order to maintain accuracy, and therefore uphold credibility in the values, a minimum quantity of "recent" historical data is required within MiBlueBook.com's statistical analysis model. Please note, this does not necessarily mean the musical instrument has no value!

Note: MIBlueBook.com provides additional information about the number of transactions on which a value is based, as well as the most recent transaction date. These additional pieces of continually updated information contribute to the confidence level and accuracy of the value range.

Does musical instrument condition affect value?
YES! Condition is one of several factors that contribute to the overall value of a used musical instrument. This is true in both the Trade-In and the Re-Sale environments. Naturally a musical instrument that is in nearly new condition would tend to yield a higher price than a musical instrument that has clearly been used for several seasons. Further, a musical instrument that has been abused or damaged has little, if any, value in the secondary market.

Other factors that affect musical instrument value are harder to quantify and are more subjective in nature. For example, a busy shop selling new and used musical gear for 20 years with a nicely appointed showroom and a reputation for outstanding customer service could most likely sell the same musical instrument for more money than many of its competitors. This in turn may allow that shop to offer higher Trade-In values as well. Of course, each situation is unique, but these, and other fundamental market dynamics (in addition to condition), all contribute to a musical instrument's overall value.

Does MIBlueBook.com value collectible musical instruments?
No. As the National Standard Resource for used musical instrument values, the purpose of MIBlueBook.com is to serve as a resource for the value of "practical", used musical instruments in the secondary market, and not to serve as a resource for the value of collectible musical instruments. Practical used musical instruments are bought and sold more regularly in the secondary market (typically for use), and therefore exhibit more statistically significant and less volatile fair market values. Musical instruments that are classified as collectible may have been intentionally produced in low quantities or designed to commemorate an important event, person or accomplishment, both of which would inflate the demand price for the musical instrument model. These musical instruments may not be typically purchased for use. Also, some older musical instruments become more valuable as a result of their age, rarity or antique status. In these instances where musical instruments are classified as collectible, MIBlueBook.com does not provide value statistics.
